Based on a drenching of 150mm of rain over recent days and subzero temperatures overnight, I decided to try to minimise probable exposure to icy conditions for my trip today. With a sunny day forecast, our best bet seemed to be to keep out in the open, away from the shade of trees – a scenic tour along the Snowy River would be a nice way to start.

After 150mm of rain over the last 36 hours, we woke to a solid cloud cover, which was forecast to clear around midday. It was now a -6°C apparent temperature with a light top-up of snow, but still very windy. A lower elevation trip amongst the trees seemed appropriate.

Charlotte Pass Village – Charlotte Pass – Kosciuszko Road – Snowy River – Lake Albina

Participants: Stephen Davies (Photos, Report), Sue Davies

This morning, I offered to lead a trip to Lake Albina. This was one of about six trips that materialised over breakfast. It would only be Sue and I who went in the end, as most other people hadn’t skied for ages and thought it might be too far for their first day, or expected it might be too exposed to some strong wind that was in the forecast.

Sligachan Hotel – Allt Dearg Mor – Allt Dearg Beag – Coire Riabhach – Sgùrr nan Gillean

Saturday 6/08/2005   Sligachan Hotel – Allt Dearg Mor – Allt Dearg Beag – Coire Riabhach – Sgùrr nan Gillean (954m)

                                         Isle of Skye, SCOTLAND

Participants: Peter Davies, Stephen Davies (Photos, Report)

In August 2005, I set out with my brother Peter to tackle Sgùrr nan Gillean on the Isle of Skye—a peak whose reputation for drama and challenge absolutely lived up to the stories. We started from the Sligachan Hotel, boots becoming damp soon after we left the car park, as the heather and moorland soaked up morning drizzle. Even from a distance, Sgùrr nan Gillean towered above us, its pinnacled ridge looking impossibly sharp and untamed.

Participants: Peter Davies, Stephen Davies (Photos, Report)

Walking the Sgùrr Alasdair route on Friday, August 5th, 2005, with my brother Peter was a classic Skye experience—demanding, dramatic, and unexpectedly rewarding. The day began under a blanket of mild, clouded weather: steady, still, and almost serene. We started from Glen Brittle, tracing the well-trodden path that leads gently uphill toward Coire Lagan, where the moody cloud lent the corrie a mystical feeling and kept the mountain’s summit shrouded.
